what would I want from good flashcard software?
a rough blog post today as I'm AFK but just some thoughts about flashcard software after reading some blog posts1.
My criteria:
- it looks nice, I want to open it and not cringe. This is extremely important to me. I can't realistically dedicate time every day to an app that is not aesthetically pleasing. It has to instil a sense of calm, a sense of trusting the spaced repetition to do its job, and you're just along for the ride.
- it ONLY does flashcards, no extra note functionality, you only open it to 1. make cards, and 2. review cards.
- think along the lines of Unbundling tools for thought
- no need for plugin functionality as it "just works"
- sync is as good as it can be across phone/desktop
- perhaps a PWA to make it as accessible as possible
- making flashcards is assisted by AI
- flashcards are markdown based
- preferably open source but at least OSS aligned like Obsidian2
